Jun 15, 2020 Michigan Iron Industry Museum Amid the forested ravines of the Marquette Iron Range, the Michigan Iron Industry Museum overlooks the Carp River and the site of the first iron forge in the Lake Superior region. The Michigan iron industry has flourished for 125 years and still produces nearly one-quarter of the iron ore mined in the United States.

The Historic Maps and Plans include 235 items that date from 1882 to 1937. The maps describe individual mines and their surrounding communities on the Marquette Range, Minnesota iron ranges, and Wisconsin. Some of these are maps of the surface plant, while others deal with underground workings or details of shaft houses.

Volunteers are developing a mining theme park that is a credit to the men and women who worked so hard to make the Marquette Iron Range world famous. Since the discovery of iron ore in 1844 at the Jackson Mine in Negaunee to today’s open pit operations at the Tilden and Empire Mines, iron from this area has been vital to our nation’s history.

Marquette, MI – June 5, 2021 – Today we celebrated Connect Marquette’s the 8th annual Iron Range Roll. Over 200 bikers, casual and competitive, raced along the 16-mile stretch of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail between Ishpeming and Marquette. While many attended the event in person, a number of racers rode in the race virtually as well.
